The White House on Wednesday refuted an assertion made by the Turkey president that President Donald Trump apologized over a melee in May, telling The Washington Post there was “no apology.”
Twice in the past week, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asserted that Trump apologized for criminal charges and the official reprimand against Erdogan’s guards, who crossed a police line and assaulted peaceful protesters near the Turkish embassy.
In an interview with PBS on Tuesday, Erdogan claimed Trump “said that he was sorry,” and last week the Turkey leader said Trump was “very saddened by this.”
“No apology,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the Post on Wednesday.
Nineteen people have been indicted over the incident, 15 of whom are Turkish security personnel.
Erdogan has defended his brute squad, telling PBS that “the protesters were insulting us, and they were screaming and shouting.”
“I’m going to get together with President Trump on Thursday, and I’m going to talk about these developments in a very extensive fashion,” said Erdogan of a planned side meeting with Trump while the two attend the United Nations powwow.
