Greece may be making preparations for another invasion of Turkey almost a hundred years after its failure in the aftermath of the World War One, a columnist for Islamist newspaper Yeni Şafak has said .
Mehmet Acet wrote that recent warnings by Turkish Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that Turkey was capable of fighting in the Aegean and in Syria at the same time suggested that Greece was setting off alarm bells at high levels of the Turkish security establishment.
Acet also cited an unnamed recently retired high-level military officer as saying that Greece had been looking to take its chances at an invasion in the wake of the failed July 15, 2016 military coup and that it had gained the support of international actors.
It was the same in the Turkish War of Independence (1919–1923), the officer told him, in which the Greek army fought Turkey with the backing of other world powers.
However, Acet said, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was the last person in Athens to want an invasion, and so a diplomatic avoidance of conflict would be possible.
