Letter to British Prime Minister, David Cameron

Mr. David Cameron

Prime Minister of the

United Kingdom

London

Mr Prime Minister

We write to you on behalf of the Greek Cypriot refugees and displaced people from the District of Kyrenia, in Cyprus. We became refugees and displaced , following the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37% of Cyprus,  in 1974.

Please be reminded that in 1974 we were the majority (85%) population of Kyrenia District and the majority property and land owners (85%) in the same District, who were ethnically cleansed, in the most brutal way, by the occupying power, Turkey.  Being citizens of the Independent Republic of Cyprus, who lived to see the Unity of our country forcibly broken down and our homeland partitioned,we felt your agony on the prospect of Scotland breaking away from the United Kingdom. Indeed we were in sympathy with you, when you were pleading with the Scots not to vote «YES»at the referendum of 17th September 2014. So did thousands of our compatriots who live in England and Scotland.

Following that experience of yours, we take the courage to address you and remind you of our plight, having our country divided for 40 years now. We anticipate that having lived through the endeavour of the Scottish referendum, you will now pay attention to our plea against the partition of Cyprus in the form of a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation. On the basis of your call for the unity of UK we ask you to support the Unity of the Republic of Cyprus.

And please sir, do not repeat the insult we have been hearing from your Government before the Scottish referendum, that your Government supports the current discussions in pursuance of a bizonal bicommunal Federation. A Bizonal Biccommunal Federation will not be restoring the unity of Cyprus. It will be legalising the de facto partition of the Republic with the creation of two separate entities’.

A good start will be,to declare your respect towards the UN Security Council Resolutions 541 & 550 and in compliance to the provisions of those resolutions:

  • Stop illegally trading with the illegal regime in the occupied areas of Cyprus
  • Stop rendering political and diplomatic support to the illegal regime
  • Close the doors to the illegal representatives of the puppet regime in the occupied areas of Cyprus.
  • Support sanctions against Turkey for the gross violations of international Law in the case of Cyprus. Be consistent on this,  with your recent politics against Russia over Ukraine
  • Pressure Turkey to withdraw its recognition to  and to dismantle the illegal regime in the occupied areas of Cyprus
  • Pressure Turkey to withdraw all its troops and settlers from Cyprus, thus restoring the independence and sovereignty of the Government of Cyprus all over its territory.
  • Declare your support to the unity of Cyprus by pressing for the lifting of the geographical separation of Greeks and Turkish Cypriots and for the restoration of the demographic character of Cyprus to the status of 1974, which was the outcome of natural evolution over centuries of coexistence.

We repeat that, in the light of your outcry for the unity of UK, we justifiably shall anticipate a reversal of British policies on Cyprus as we analysed above. We hope you will not let yourself and the British people down.

In anticipation of your reply,

Sincerely

For the Association,

Ioannis Shekersavvas
